His family relocated to South Africa when Serge Belamant was 14 years old. After learning how to write and speak in English he then joined high school. He was a bright and sociable student. He participated in different extra-curricular activities in school. He was a great rugby player and also exceed in Chess. His excellent high school results got him an admission at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg to study engineering.
He decided to switch courses and pursue computer science and applied mathematics when he was in his second year. In his third year of study, he transferred to University if South Africa where he pursued information systems. He, however, did not get the chance to finish his degree.
Serge Belamant joined the workforce when he was 22. His first job was at Matrix at the BKSH department. Matrix was a huge civil engineering firm. He then developed an application that determined water levels in dams. This application also helped to predict the occurrence of future famine.
When working at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, he continued to create complex computer models for different projects. His exemplary skills earned him a promotion where he was put in charge of the computer section for the road planning project at Pretoria, Witwatersrand, and Veerning.
Serge Belamant kept on advancing his career and his biggest success occurred when he joined SASWITCH as the head of IT. He had been hired to solve the problem of the company’s switching system. To solve the problem for RSA banks, He developed a new ATM switch. He left SWASWITCH in 1989 and started his own company; Net 1 Technologies. His company got its big break when it was hired by Visa to develop new applications.
